چکیده

The focus of this paper is on the working status of the spouse of an unemployed. Does it systematically differ from the working status of the spouse of an employed person? If so, are there any causal-or non-causal mechanisms behind such an interrelationship, and in that case what are they? So far, there has not been any study in Norway focusing on unemployment at the household level. This paper examines the interrelationship between unemployed of a married/cohabiting person and the working situation of the spouse by using a cross-sectional data set of the Gallup-type from 1995. The starting point is theoretical explanations for (un) employment homogamy, namely spo use selection and sh ared restrictions, mutua l influenc ing, the disc ourage d work er effect, additional worker effect (additional job seeker effect) and unobserved heterogeneity. The data demonstrate a substantial gap in lab our forc e participation rate (employment shortfall) of spouse between employed and unemployed males as w ell as fema les. Multiv ariate analy ses dem onstrate tha t even w hen con trolling for all relevant independent variables, the observed unemployment homo gamy found in bivariate analyses still remains. These findings confirm what has been found for other countries, namely that there is a social polarisation between dual-earner households and households were both spouses periodically are unemployed and/or outside labour force. Shortcom ings in the available da ta set make it difficult to identify the m ain mecha nisms behind unemployment homogamy. Yet, the additional jo b seeker e ffect seem s to be of sig nificance , and bein g the on ly factor, wh ich we w ith confidence could call a causal one. This means that the wife or husband of an unemployed register with the unem ploym ent office fo r financial re asons as a c onsequ ence of th e spouse being u nemp loyed. Introduction The focus of this article is the possible association between the labour force status of couples. Does the working status of the spouse of an employed person differ significantly from that of an unemployed person? If so, are there any causal or non-causal mechanisms behind such

The educational homogamy gap between married and cohabiting couples in Latin America.

The explosive expansion of non-marital cohabitation in Latin America since the 1970s has led to the narrowing of the gap in educational homogamy between married and cohabiting couples (what we call "homogamy gap") as shown by our analysis of 29 census samples encompassing eight countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico and Panama (N = 2,295,160 young couples). Pathways to educational homogamy in marital and cohabiting unions.

There is considerable disagreement about whether cohabitors are more or less likely to be educationally homogamous than married couples. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, I reconcile many of the disparate findings of previous research by conducting a "stock and flow" analysis of assortative cohabitation and marriage. I find that cohabitors are less likely to be educatio...

Employment stability and mental health in Spain: towards understanding the influence of gender and partner/marital status

BACKGROUND The growing demand for labour flexibility has resulted in decreasing employment stability that could be associated with poor mental health status. Few studies have analysed the whole of the work force in considering this association since research on flexible forms of employment traditionally analyses employed and unemployed people separately. The gender division of work, and family ...

Health behaviors and union dissolution among parents of young children: Differences by marital status

Previous research finds that marriage is associated with better health and lower mortality, and one of the mechanisms underlying this association is health-related selection out of marriage. Using longitudinal survey data from 2,348 couples from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, we examine whether certain health behaviors-smoking and binge drinking-are associated with risk of unio...

Same-Sex and Different-Sex Cohabiting Couple Relationship Stability.

Relationship stability is a key indicator of well-being, but most U.S.-based research has been limited to different-sex couples. The 2008 panel of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) provides an untapped data resource to analyze relationship stability of same-sex cohabiting, different-sex cohabiting, and different-sex married couples (n = 5,701). The advantages of the SIPP dat...
